Henry James (1843-1916), novelist, was born in New York on 15 April 1843. He was educated in New York, London, Paris and Geneva, and studied law at Harvard. After settling in Europe in 1875, he lived in London, 1876-1898, and at Rye, 1898-1916, becoming a naturalised citizen in 1915. James was the author of The portrait of a lady (1881), The wings of the dove (1902) and The ambassadors (1903). He died at Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, on 28 February 1916.
